 Quest for a glorious career...

Part 3: Find out your kid’s niche

After completing 10th standard exam, many students start their quest to find answer

to the single question which would define their life... “what to do after 10th ?!!” , just

like Rahul in our previous blog. When they approach this problem by contacting

others they are guided based on limited understanding, biased views and unscientific

reasoning which either heads them a disaster or confuses them further.

In contrast, if a student answers to few important questions like, What I love do

learn?” , “What I am good at?”, “what is beneficial to me in longer run ?” , can

make education and career an enjoyable journey for students as well as parents.

Career aptitude test provide a systematic approach based on psychological analysis as

well as past data collated from thousands of students and analysed over a number for

years.

Orientation : What I love to learn?

Orientation or interest differ from student to student. Some of them love to do artistic

activities, some of them have interest in gaining knowledge. Some of them develope

good practical approach towards life.

Orientations may change from time to time.

Abilities : What I am good at?

Now apart from what I love to do, there are some innate abilities , activities which I

am rally good at. For example one can do Numerical calculations very well , others

will have good hold over any subject.

There are various centres which conduct aptitude tests including few online tests

which can generate report free of cost. There is no harm in giving free tests at the

same it also puts you at the risk of generalised guidance.

IPH Institute ,Thane and Jnana Prabodhini Sanstha Pune are few such organisation

which conduct these tests and have good success rate. They are working in this field

for more than a decade now.

Once the students know their orientation and abilities based on aptitude test. Next

important question remains, that is what is beneficial to me in longer run ? And

subsequently next thing which most of the students like to know “Which college

/course can help me to progress in this direction?”

Once abilities and orientation is validated with aptitude test, career counsellors  can

suggest career options / education stream which can help them in longer run. Career

counsellor can also suggest the areas student need to improve and possible ways to

improve those as well.

Approach suggested in today’s blog makes decision making a systematic and less

risky process. However it is not easy and quick . It will take time and considering

criticality of decision, it has to!

Parents / elders play an important role at this point of time. Parents once aware of

child's capabilities and orientation need to help in deciding career path taking into

account their financial capability. They are the torch bearers and their active

participation in this crucial decision can guide the student towards bright future.

We at Aashay, recoginize significance of this major milestone in student’s life and

offer services like conducting career aptitude tests and career counselling based on

the report which can not only uncover student’s orientation and abilities but also help

them in career selection for a bright and happy future.

Quest for a glorious career...

Part 2: Kya kare kya na kare..

As we saw in our previous blog, after completing his 10th standard exam, Rahul started his quest to find answer to the single question which would define his life... “what to do after 10th ?!!”

Despite knowing modus operandi of many, Rahul was extremely confused as he realized most of them were taking most important decision of their life in most unscientific way. I am sure you all will also find many misguided souls around who take such critical decision based on beliefs prevalent in our society. I have tried to list a few most popular ones, though I am sure the list is much longer:

Doctor ka beta doctor: This belief is partly result of the  traditional social set-up in our country from pre-historic times. Though society is shading off caste  based mindset, still there is   a deep rooted faith that offsprings naturally genetically inherit skills passed to them by their parents as legacy. This makes people believe that it is safe for students to follow the footsteps of their parents.

This belief is further strengthen by the parents themselves. They usually lack knowledge of available career paths and related opportunities in fields other than their own domain. And to “safeguard” future of their children they push them to take up a “known” path without validating kids’ inclinations.

Do you know the fact that  Sachin Tendulkar’s dad was not a cricketer, but a well-known marathi writer and poet!

Intelligent students = science students: This is yet popular   assumption. Many parents feel that if their child will be recognized as a bright student only if he or she is opting for a professional course in science stream. In fact, I have seen many parents simply pushing their kids in science studies despite they pass with bare minimum marks in related subjects in their entire school time. It is unfair to equate inteligence to science as a student may be extremely good in many other subjects and can have bright career there too!

Nahi toh baad mein pachhataoge: Many parents make the result of 10th exam as well as stream selection after after 10th exam, a “Life and death” decision. I am sure this decision is important, but it is just the first step of a long journey ahead and it is always possible to do a course correction.

Computer engineer bano, warana koi career nahi hei: This is the latest and most impactful myth told to students in last twenty plus years. I agree that in 21st century the opportunities in computer science have increased exponentially and probability to get jobs with good “salaries” is much higher. However that does not mean that other career options are absolute zero.

The way society needs computer engineers, is also needs other skills and domain knowledge to run the businesses which will in turn use computers.

As one can see decisions taken based on these beliefs may not necessarily lead to a successful career for the student. Alternatively, even if they get into a “fat salary job”, they may not enjoy their life when they work in a career they detest the most.

If a student answers to few important questions like, What I love do learn?” , “What I am good at?”, “what is beneficial to me in longer run ?” , can make education and career an enjoyable journey for students as well as parents. Quest for a glorious career...

Part 1:Mera beta toh “Engineer” banega..

As Rahul came back after giving his last paper of 10th exam, he was super happy. He was looking forward for long vacations and cool college-life after that, where there was no school-uniform and strictness...

On his way back, he met Arora aunty who was the next door neighbor. With a broad smile she enquired him about exam and wished him happy holidays. But the next question she asked , made Rahul lose all the joy and got him into a deep thought ...

The question was “Aage ka kya socha hei? .. alias “what do you plan to do after 10th ?!!”

BTW , Toh beta , ab aage kya plan hai ?" is the daunting question every other person asks as soon as the student finish  boards .  A 10th standard student becomes almost the center of attraction of the neighbourhood , every person wanting to know what his or her future would be.Many  of the times the student do not want to hear but such questions as they themselves are  not having any clarity in this regard.

After studying hard for the entire year and preparing for over hyped board examination Rahul was  not in a frame of mind to  think  about all these things. At the same time , he was well aware of the fact that many of his friends had already confirmed their admission in various  coaching Institutes.

Suddenly he had many questions clouding his mind with a fear of uncertain future ahead . All subjects which  were part of single school syllabus, split themselves under the banner of Science, commerce and arts and started fighting. In fact he was not even sure if most of these subjects would have any actual relation at all with these branches or his career !!!

As he was not able to find any answer for this question on his own, he decided to take guidance from senior students around.

At first he approached his own elder brother to know about rationale his career choice. He found his answer very amusing and funny. His elder bother was studying pharmacy though he hated it most, just because one of their uncle was able to settle in USA after completing his initial degree in pharmacy and post-graduation in USA.

Being disillusioned by his brother’s answer, he decides to take a view from his best friend Ameya. There he realized that just like “Farhan Qureshi” in 3 idiots, fate of his closest friend was sealed by his parents when he was just born. He was destined to be a doctor “as per his parents’ wish” even when he himself feared going to hospital.

Rahul, not being convinced by this, decided to talk to Nishant, the smart and most intelligent student in his housing society. But realized he also had decided to prepare for IIT entrance exams, just because his elder cousin was studying in IIT.

Rahul did not find any of these reasons compelling to decide his future. Even after talking to many Rahul was not still convinced in fact even further confused... the question that comes to his mind was “Kya kare kya na kare.”
